Where Forests Dream - Studio 116

Studio 116 is pleased to present Donde Sueña el Bosque (Where the Forest Dreams), a magical installation of paintings and fiber art by Robert Smith and José Bayro C. An installation of paintings and fiber art by Robert Smith and José Bayro C. Smith’s handcrafted sculptures—including crocheted mushrooms, creatures, and other whimsical forms—combine with Bayro’s oil paintings and fine prints to create an imaginative world where nature, fantasy, and storytelling meet.

Robert’s handcrafted fiber sculptures transform the gallery into an enchanted forest filled with crocheted mushrooms, creatures, and whimsical forms inspired by the natural world. José’s oil paintings expand this dreamlike environment through imaginative landscapes and fantastical scenes.

Together, their work creates a place between reality and fantasy — a world where art invites curiosity, wonder, and connection.

Studio 116 has been transformed into an enchanted forest for Donde Sueña el Bosque (Where the Forest Dreams),

The exhibit is at Studio 116, 116 W. Blue Ridge Road in East Flat Rock. Gallery hours are Wednesday through Saturday, 11 a.m.–4 p.m., or by appointment.

Luminous Encaustic Monotypes Workshop at Studio

Luminous Encaustic Monotypes Workshop
with Heidi Mayfield

Two-Day Printmaking Workshop

Come and be enchanted by the magic of encaustic monotype printmaking using molten beeswax, rich pigments, and delicate papers. This ancient medium—older than oil painting—creates luminous translucent color.

Perfect for beginners and experienced artists alike, this workshop requires no drawing experience—only curiosity. You’ll leave with a collection of original encaustic monotypes and a deeper appreciation for this mesmerizing and captivating fine art process.

All materials are provided. This includes 1 full sheet of Rives BFK (enough for 4 prints). Additional paper may be purchased in house.
Cash or card accepted.

During the first day of this workshop, you’ll apply pigmented encaustic wax directly onto the warm plate before lifting one-of-a-kind prints onto Japanese printmaking paper and rice papers. As the wax melts, flows, and blends, each print reveals its own unique character, inviting experimentation, spontaneity, and creative play.

Day two of this workshop incorporates your encaustic creations into classic monotype printmaking using the chine collé wheat paste method. Learn the basics of traditional monotype techniques to manipulate oil based inks on a Plexiglas plate using brushes, DIY tools, and brayers. You will create unique collage prints by layering and transferring your encaustic prints and oil based monotype images onto a sturdy sheet of traditional printmaking paper using a traditional etching press.

Full Moon Story Hour

AUGUST FULL MOON STORY HOUR

STURGEON MOON

Friday, August 28th 4 – 5pm at

The Sanctuary in the Pines

https://www.sanctuaryinthepines.com

The Algonquian Tribe referred to the full moon in August as the Sturgeon Moon. Giant lake sturgeon of the Great Lakes and Lake Champlain were most readily caught during the full moon at this time. I had no idea that Sturgeon fish range from 2 feet to over 20 feet long, weighing from 5 pounds up to 1,500 pounds. They are massive, long-lived prehistoric freshwater fish.

Every full moon community is invited to circle up and share stories. It’s a bit like The Moth Radio Hour, just a bit. This event is a free way to enjoy some sweet and sour soulful sharing. Our theme for August is FAR FROM HOME. Questions below are simply to prime your memory.

Let me know if you would like me to take you off of the email list. Nothing personal. Be in touch if you have questions or concerns. I will be your host for the evening, Diane Rhoades

All are welcome.

COME EARLY SO WE CAN BEGIN ON TIME!

The Odd Couple - Flat Rock Playhouse

THE ODD COUPLE

August 28 – September 19

Pour a drink and duck for cover — domestic bliss is about to get messy.

Meet Felix: impeccably pressed, emotionally distressed, and suddenly single. Meet Oscar: charmingly rumpled, habitually late, and blissfully allergic to coasters. When Felix moves in with his old pal Oscar after a marital meltdown, neatness meets nonsense, and the sparks fly.

Ashtrays overflow, tempers flare, and laughter fills the living room in Neil Simon’s effervescent comedy of friendship, forgiveness, and the fine art of driving each other crazy. The Odd Couple is a classic cocktail of chaos and charm. Proof that opposites attract … so long as they don’t share a kitchen.

Premiere of Raising Cane by David Weintraub

Imagine a mystery plant that could protect riverbanks from flooding and erosion, that was an important habitat for wildlife and was an essential staple for Southeastern native tribes including the Cherokee.  Now imagine what the consequences would be if 98% of that magic plant was gone?

David Weintraub and the Center for Cultural Preservation will premiere its newest documentary, “RAISING CANE- The Cherokee and Rivercane” on September 19 in Flat Rock.  According to Weintraub, the film’s director, “William Bartram, the naturalist, explorer and author encountered such vast, dense forests of cane so massive along streambanks in his travels in the 1770s that he said they were impenetrable.  Southeastern tribes relied on cane as a food source, they built their houses out of it, carved blowguns for hunting and made cane mats and baskets with it.  But today, rivercane, America’s native bamboo is disappearing.”

Mary Welch Thompson is an acclaimed Cherokee basketmaker who uses white oak, honeysuckle and rivercane to make her baskets.  “Historically, rivercane was the most important resource for making baskets, mats and many other things.  However, rivercane loves waterfront property and so does man.  The Cherokee launched a basketry revival campaign more than twenty years ago to revitalize a tradition that goes back tens of thousands of years.  The biggest issue for us is the lack of rivercane to continue making them.

Fortunately, a number of conservation groups throughout the region are working in partnership with the Eastern Band of Cherokee to restore rivercane as a critical protector or streambanks, habitat and as an essential resource for basketry.   Weintraub adds, “Raising Cane looks at this magic plant through the eyes of the natural world, native tribes and stewardship so that we all can become the heroes nature is asking us to be.”

Raising Cane will have its world premiere on Saturday, September 19 at 7:00 PM at the Thomas Auditorium at Blue Ridge Community College.  In addition to the film screening, Cherokee elders and conservationists will discuss the future of rivercane and basketry and take questions from the audience.  Additionally, the Center will be celebrating its 15th birthday, so the event will be followed by music and food and drinks for ticketholders.

Advance tickets to this event, which are expected to sellout,  can be ordered online at https://saveculture.org/shop/raising-cane/. This film is made possible by the North Carolina Humanities, the Community Foundation of Henderson County, Asset Marketing Brokers, Wild Birds Unlimited Hendersonville and the supports of the Center for Cultural Preservation.  The Center for Cultural Preservation is a cultural nonprofit organization dedicated to working for mountain heritage continuity through oral history, documentary film, education and public programs. Celtic Harp Concert

Friends of Music & the Arts Present

Celtic Harp Concert Opens New Series Season

Flat Rock, N.C. –  The Friends of Music & the Arts Series at the Episcopal Church of St. John in the Wilderness welcomes autumn with a Celtic Harp concert Sunday, September 20 at 4:00 p.m.  Open to the public, the free concert will be held in the spacious Parish Hall opposite the church at 1905 Greenville Highway, Flat Rock.

The harp quartet ensemble, Banrigh (pronounced Bahn-ree, meaning “Queen” in Scottish Gaelic) embodies a royal tribute to traditional Celtic music and culture. Four multi-talented musicians from the Midwest and Southeast have performed and traveled together worldwide for a decade, receiving high praise for their skill and versatility.

One of the oldest instruments in the world, the harp is mentioned in the Book of Genesis. The Celtic Harp, also called Folk Harp, evolved over centuries with its recognizable triangular frame and strings made of horsehair appearing in the 8th century. At 30 to 50 inches tall, the modern Celtic Harp is about half the size of the Concert Grand Harp.

The Banrigh quartet’s accomplished musicians include:

Donna Bennett, a clinical social worker, incorporates music in mental health therapy with children and adults. She has released a book of original and therapeutic harp music. She is a board member with the Scottish Harp Society of America.

Martha Geouge Hill, a North Carolina native and multi-instrumentalist, is passionate about her Celtic heritage. She has won awards at the Grandfather Mountain Highland Games as a soloist and in ensemble.

Jen Narkevicius teaches and performs in Washington, D. C., and is Co-Director of Harp Quest working with students.  A Hospice volunteer, she brings music to the bedside of hospital patients.

Sue Richards, a four-time winner of the American National Scottish Harp Championship, developed and taught the harp program at the Ohio Scottish Arts School. She composes and performs with Ensemble Galilei in multi-media concerts.

Donations will be appreciated to support Friends of Music & the Arts ongoing series.  For more information visit www.stjohnflatrock.org.

Holy Hike with St. John in the Wilderness

SJITW Holy Hike

Upcoming Hike on Thursday, August 13:
Lake Powhatan in Bent Creek

https://www.stjohnflatrock.org/upcoming-hike

On August 13, Holy Hikers will explore the Bent Creek Recreation Area. This is an easy 2-mile out-and-back hike with little elevation gain. There is an option to extend the hike with an additional 1-mile loop trail around Lake Powhatan. The trails are suitable for families with young children or anyone who prefers to avoid more challenging trails.

We will walk the Hard Times Trail for approximately 0.6 mile to the Lake Powhatan dam, then continue on around the lake to the beach, which is another ½ mile or so. At that point some participants may wish to hike the 1-mile loop around the lake. Other participants may choose to relax on the beach and swim. As always, we will find a quiet spot for noonday prayer and lunch.

The earliest known inhabitants of the Bent Creek basin are from the Archaic period 8,000 years ago. The Cherokee are thought to have occupied two large campsites near the creek starting about 500 BC. Around 1795, when European settlers began moving into the area, the creek was named for a horseshoe-shaped bend near the French Broad River.

The Hard Times Trailhead is is located at 375 Wesley Branch Rd, Asheville, NC 28806. This is 24 miles from from St. John in the Wilderness with an approximate drive time of 40 minutes. In order to avoid the heat and take advantage of early morning parking availability, the hike will begin at 8:00am. Carpooling is highly recommended as parking fills very quickly this time of year. Carpoolers should plan to meet at St. John at 7:15am. If you wish to drive directly to Bent Creek, plan to be at the Hard Times Trailhead parking area no later than 8:00am. Restroom facilities are located at this trailhead. As always, remember to bring your snacks, lunch and plenty of water. You may also wish to bring swim gear if you choose to swim at the beach instead of hiking the optional 1 mile loop. Dogs are allowed but must remain on leash.

Gather & Hike at Highland Lake Cove: Monthly Outdoor Adventures

 Learn More Here

Welcome to our new monthly series designed for community, connection, and accessible exploration. Offered by Highland Lake Cove, Gather & Hike brings you unique outdoor experiences designed for hikers who aren’t up to summiting mountains anymore. Along with your nature outing, expect good food and great conversation.

Time Commitment: 9:00 AM – 2:00 PM

This window covers our morning meetup at Highland Lake Cove, travel to and from the trailhead, unhurried time on the trail, and a relaxed lunch afterward at Treska’s Cafe.

Highland Lake Cove is proud to feature dynamic collaborations with local experts to lead these monthly excursions. Please join us:

  • Friday, August 7, 2026 — Slickum Falls with Gordie Stein: Organized in partnership with the popular Hendo Fun Friends Meetup group. Slickum Falls is an example of a rare ecological community, known as a cataract bog. Cataract bogs form where a permanent stream flows slowly over a steeply sloped rock outcrop. A thin layer of soil forms on the edges of the stream's flow, and this moist soil supports a number of rare plant species to create the bog. In stark contrast, just yards from the stream are two dry habitat plants - lichen and prickly pear cactus. These falls are in the Eva Russell Chandler Heritage Preserve, managed by the S.C. Department of Natural Resources, in the Mountain Bridge Wilderness area between Ceasars Head and Jones Gap. Slickum Falls drops over a run of 150 yards down the sloperock into a thick forest.  We will NOT attempt walking down the sloperock. This hike features a flat, 100-foot stroll to a multi-tiered cascade and sandy shore. It is designed specifically for those whose spirits are willing, but the body requires a gentler pace, providing a wonderful opportunity to re-engage with nature and sit in the shade without the demands of a harder trek. Bring a camp chair.
    Trail Logistics
    Distance: 100 feet each way
    Elevation Gain: 36 feet
Estimated Trail Time: 1 hour (Out & back, including sitting time)
Approximate Drive Time: 40 minutes from Flat Rock, NC
Capacity Limit: Space is limited to 12 participants; registration required.

  • Friday, September 11, 2026 — Bearwallow Mountain with Conserving Carolina (Field Notes from the Cove): Led by a professional naturalist from our local land conservancy, this excursion features a steady, moderate climb to a stunning open grassy summit with sweeping 270-degree mountain views. Join Pam Torlina as she shares her deep knowledge of our regional ecology, wildlife, and insightful conservation stories about the dedicated efforts that have protected so much of our beautiful mountain habitat.  (Approximate drive time from Flat Rock, NC: 30–35 minutes).

The Routine

We meet at Highland Lake Cove, arrange independent carpools to a scenic local destination selected with our active community in mind, and enjoy an approachable, rewarding outdoor experience. Afterward, we return to the property for a fresh lunch at Treska’s Cafe to continue the morning’s conversation.

Important Program Notes

  • Registration & Waivers: Space is limited for each outing. Advance registration is required, and all participants must sign a standard liability waiver prior to departure.

Carpooling: Carpooling is arranged entirely at each individual's own discretion and will. Highland Lake Cove does not provide transportation or assume any liability for transit to and from the trailheads.

Music by the Lake: Julie McConnell Quartet

July 26, 2026
5 to 7 p.m.

Julie McConnell, by way of San Diego, is quite simply one of the best jazz singers in the greater area, bringing shows that are powerful, moving, poignant, funny and personal through her delivery of song. Julie and her group were the “Clubland Feature” band in the Mountain Xpress for Valentines 2023, as well as featured in “30 Days Out” in 2019. Julie was also the featured story in the March 2020 issue of Sofia Magazine, and she was one of the headliners for the Johnson City Jazz Festival in 2025. Add to that her smokin’ hot trio with the phenomenally intuitive musician/composer, Bryan McConnell, previously the bassist for jazz legends John Handy and Bobby Hutcherson; the respected and attuned musician, Justin Watt, formerly the drummer for the Glen Miller Orchestra and the great composer/author/jazz guitarist, Tim Fischer, who studied with Bruce Forman.
