Tour of St. John in the Wilderness Church and Church Yard

Learn about Flat Rock History

Tour St. John in the Wilderness this Summer and Fall

Exploring local history continues in one of the oldest churches in Western North Carolina. The Episcopal Church of St. John in the Wilderness in Flat Rock offers guided tours of the 175-year-old church and churchyard.

Held on the third Saturdays of the month through December, tours start inside the Church at 11 a.m. and last about an hour. Additional tours are offered on the first Saturday of the month in August and September. There are no rain dates and participants are encouraged to wear comfortable shoes.

The church docent tours are free but advance reservations must be made online through the church's website, www.stjohnflatrock.org/tours. Space is limited for each tour.

“We are so fortunate to be able to share the story of this beautiful holy place with visitors. Our history has its roots in both the mountain community of Flat Rock and in coastal South Carolina, the home of our founders and early congregants,” said lead docent Polly Morrice.

The historically significant churchyard contains graves of notable historic figures and local citizens as well as those of unnamed 19th-century enslaved persons.

After the tour ends, participants may choose to explore the recently opened Trails of St. John, located behind the Parish Hall complex, directly across Rutledge Drive from the church.

“Our aim as docents is to convey what has shaped us, both the painful and the good, ranging from Civil War bushwhackers to Carl Sandburg’s memorial service,” Morrice reflected. “We do stress that St. John is not a museum, but a vibrant, welcoming church. We welcome all who would like to make more history with us.”

The church is located at 1895 Greenville Highway. For more information call the church office at 828-693-9783 or visit www.stjohnflatrock.org.

St. John in the Wilderness History

In 1827, Charles Baring, a member of the Baring banking family of England, built a home in Flat Rock. He and his wife, Susan, wanted a summer place to escape the oppressive heat, humidity, and malaria of the South Carolina Lowcountry where they lived.

At the behest of Susan, a devout Anglican, Charles built a chapel on the property of Mountain Lodge, their newly constructed home. The small wooden structure soon burned down in a woods fire. In 1833, work began on a second church built of handmade brick.

In August 1836, the Barings deeded their chapel to the Episcopal Diocese of North Carolina, and 20 members of the Flat Rock summer colony of Lowcountry planters and merchants formed an Episcopal parish. In the 1890s, St. John in the Wilderness became part of the Diocese of Western North Carolina; it is the oldest parish in that diocese.

With almost all its congregation traveling home to the Lowcountry at summer’s end, the church operated mainly during that season for its first 120 years. The Flat Rock summer community grew so rapidly during the 1830s and 1840s, however, that the parish membership outgrew the small chapel. In the early 1850s, the church vestry, or governing body, made the decision to rebuild the church, doubling its size. The English chapel-style structure that stands today is, with only a few minor modifications, the church that was completed in 1852.

Conversations by Laura Ralls Duprey

Studio 116

Studio 116 is pleased to present an exhibition featuring recent paintings and ceramics by artist Laura Ralls Duprey, whose abstract works explore the evolving relationships between color, gesture, structure, and perception

July 8 – 25

Approaching painting as an open-ended process rather than a fixed statement, Duprey creates works that emerge through layers of marks, revisions, and intuitive responses. Her paintings balance structure and spontaneity, allowing meaning to develop organically through the act of making.

“My work unfolds at the meeting point of structure and intuition,” says Duprey. “I approach painting as an active process rather than a predetermined image, allowing each piece to develop through a continual exchange between gesture, perception, and material.”

The exhibition highlights Duprey’s long-standing commitment to abstraction and material exploration. Built slowly over time, the surfaces of her paintings reveal traces of hesitation, clarity, interruption, and change. Rather than directing viewers toward a single interpretation, the work invites personal reflection and shifting perception.

Inspired by Art

The Gallery at Flat Rock

Join us for Inspired by Art, an evening of writing inspired by visual art. Friday evening, July 24 at 6:30 pm In this first-of-its-kind event at The Gallery at Flat Rock, you will hear live readings by local authors. Each author has been challenged to select a piece of art currently displayed at the gallery and write about it. They may draft a poem, short story, memoir – anything they are inspired to write. You will hear why the art inspired them and how it guided their writing. The true challenge is the timeline with which the writers must work. They will come to the gallery on Tuesday, July 21 to choose the art they wish to write about. So it’s a quick turnaround! I hope you can experience this with us!

The following writers have accepted the challenge: Bruce Holliday, Mary Beth Stevens, Kathleen Calby, Diane Rhoades, Beth Beasley, Tenzin Morgana, Amy Bonesteel Smith, Karen Luke Jackson, and Tony Robles. This is a free event but please call or email the gallery to RSVP so we can plan for seating. Thank you!

We encourage guests to arrive early to enjoy a relaxed dinner and live opening set before the main performance begins, as the evening is designed to create an intimate, focused listening experience for both artist and audience. Come unwind with great food, beautiful scenery, and live music as the sun sets over the lake

Mac Arnold & Plate Full O’ Blues carry a remarkable legacy rooted in the early days of American blues and R&B.

Arnold’s musical journey began in his youth in South Carolina, where he played in a high school band that occasionally featured a young James Brown on piano. After honing his craft, he moved to Chicago in the mid‑1960s, where he was quickly recruited by Muddy Waters—an opportunity that placed him at the center of the electric blues movement alongside legends like Otis Spann and John Lee Hooker. Over the years, he performed and recorded with icons including B.B. King and Otis Redding, and later worked in Los Angeles on projects like Soul Train before stepping away from the industry for a time. Now back on stage with Plate Full O’ Blues, Arnold brings decades of experience, storytelling, and groove to a sound that blends blues, soul, and funk into an energetic and deeply authentic live performance.

Flat Rock Preservation Celebration

Flat Rock Preservation Celebration

https://www.presnc.org/events/event/flat-rock-preservation-celebration/

Take a respite in the NC mountains this summer to explore Flat Rock, established in the Blue Ridge in the late 1820s as a colony for wealthy Charlestonians and other South Carolinians to escape the deadly summer diseases and heat. It is sometimes known as “Little Charleston of the Mountains.”

Guests will start the day with a special tour of Beaumont, where preservation is in progress after a fire damaged portions of the property. And yet, there is abundant beauty in the ashes of the rooms that burned! Local preservationists have been working to clean and protect the property while a new buyer is sought to restore the grand estate. The 1839 house has quite a history; the dining room was the site of a Civil War tragedy when its owner was fatally shot in front of his family. In 1910, Biltmore’s supervising architect Richard Sharp Smith designed the monumental over-build that is prominent today and boasts over 8,000 square feet. The 4.76-acre site contains a 1910 octagonal ice house, landscaped grounds, a pool, pool house, and tennis court.

From there, St. John in the Wilderness will open its storied doors. St. John’s, the oldest parish in the Diocese of Western North Carolina, began in 1827 when Charles Baring of England built a private chapel on his summer estate. After the original wooden structure burned, a brick church was built in 1833 and officially deeded to the Diocese of North Carolina in 1836, forming an Episcopal parish primarily made up of affluent Charleston summer residents. To accommodate a rapidly growing congregation, the church was rebuilt and doubled in size in 1852, resulting in the historic structure that stands today. St. John’s was unusual in that white people and enslaved black people worshipped together. Its historic churchyard serves as the final resting place for notable early American figures, military leaders, and both enslaved and freed individuals. The 1853 rectory still stands today on the 23-acre church property.

We’ll end the afternoon at the stunning historic house and grounds at Many Pines, one of the most intact complexes of the “old Flat Rock” estates. The house was constructed in 1847 for Charlestonian merchant James Reid Pringle and his wife, Sarah Ladson, by Henry “Squire” Farmer, a well-known builder of many early buildings in Flat Rock and Hendersonville. The original Greek Revival and Gothic two-and-a-half-story house with its 1888 Victorian embellishments create a happy blend of fretwork, latticework, and pointed and rounded arches. A pine-lined driveway leads to the house, situated on a meadowed hill and fronted by a circular drive and landscaped grounds. A dozen outbuildings have been carefully retained, among them a kitchen building, lattice vegetable house, barn, stone dairy, and slave and servant quarters. Augustine T. Smythe acquired the property in 1908 and gave it the name Many Pines. It is owned today by their great-granddaughter, preservationist and architectural historian Langdon Edmunds Oppermann and her husband, noted preservation architect Joe Oppermann.

Boosinger, a North Carolina native, has dedicated her life to preserving and sharing Appalachian musical traditions through performance, teaching, and cultural work, including her role with the Blue Ridge Music Trails and her induction into the Blue Ridge Music Hall of Fame. Full Moon Story Hour

Full Moon Story Hour at the Cove

The Full Moon Story Hour originally took root in the community in October 2024, drawing inspiration from the format of The Moth Radio Hour by sharing true, unscripted stories under four minutes centered around a specific theme. This traveling story core has moved through several local venues, including the Gallery at Flat Rock, the Kanuga Conference Center, and Studio 116. Now, this tradition continues as the Full Moon Story Hour joins the lively dynamic at Highland Lake Cove.

Community members are invited to circle up and share stories on Monday, June 29th, at 4:00 PM at the Sanctuary in the Pines to celebrate the Strawberry Moon. This name was originally coined by the Algonquin, Ojibwe, Dakota, and Lakota peoples to signify the peak of the wild strawberry harvest. Because the actual full moon occurs at 7:58 PM that evening, guests will have ample time to gather inspiration before heading home to place a jar of water in the moonlight overnight to catch a bit of elemental inspiration.

The theme for this month is Rain. Memory-priming questions are provided to help spark the storytelling process, though the true focus remains on the personal memories that move each speaker.

The Feast of St. John

The Feast of St. John Helps Helene Survivors

Sunday, June 21 at Hubba Hubba Smokehouse

Flat Rock, N.C. – The Episcopal Church of St. John in the Wilderness invites you to celebrate its patron saint, John the Baptist, with the Feast of St. John. The sixth annual celebration will be held from 5:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. on Sunday, June 21, 2026 at Hubba Hubba Smokehouse, located on Little Rainbow Row at 2724 Greenville Highway in Flat Rock.

The family-friendly celebration features food, fellowship and live music with the return of North Carolina based Chatham Rabbits. Sarah and Austin McCombie tour nationwide, have released four full-length records and still find time to run their farm in Chatham County.

Even though the event is free, this is a fundraiser for the ongoing Hurricane Helene Relief efforts in Bat Cave, Chimney Rock and Lake Lure. The funds will go to the Church of the Transfiguration in Bat Cave.  Father John Roberts of the parish said, “Our focus is on meeting specific unmet financial needs for our community. Everything given to our Hurricane Recovery fund is restricted for rebuilding purposes. This is an ongoing effort and that will continue this year. Last year, we distributed over $105,000 out of this fund for unmet needs, small grants, and rebuilding efforts to over 50 households.”

Donation receptacles will be present at the event.  For anyone wishing to donate outside the event, visit www.stjohnflatrock.org/donate. Check the box to write a comment and type "Feast of St. John.

Guests should arrive early to get their food order in and find a seat. Yard games will be offered for children.  Barbecue and other family-favorite foods and beverages will be available for purchase at Hubba Hubba Smokehouse.  Seating at the picturesque outdoor courtyard is limited, so guests are encouraged to bring portable chairs.

If rain spoils the outdoor fun, the concert will begin at 6:00 p.m. inside the Parish Hall of the church at 1905 Greenville Highway in Flat Rock. Food will not be offered. For more information, visit www.stjohnflatrock.org or call 828-693-9783.

Generations Over Dinner

Generations Over Dinner

Friday, June 19, 2026 at 6 PM at the Treska's Pavilion, we're tickled to bring back Generations Over Dinner for the third year in a row, due to popular demand.

What happens when you sit at a table with someone 30 years older than you and someone 20 years younger? The conversation changes. The questions get better. You start to remember things you didn't know you were carrying.

This is an evening of real food (from Treska's kitchen), real stories, and the kind of conversation that crosses every generational line. Facilitators Hope Paterson and Julian Guderley return to lead the evening, bringing the same warmth and depth that has made this one of the most talked-about events at Highland Lake.

This year, the evening opens with short, true stories from people who live the Highland Lake story. Then you'll sit at a mixed-generation table and talk about what this place means, what your generation sees in it, and what you'd carry forward.

Guests have traveled from Canada, Vermont, and Texas to be at these tables. Ages six to ninety-three have shared a meal and left saying it was unlike anything they'd experienced. Seats are limited. You can purchase your tickets below:

Neighborly Alliance Hendo

Hello Neighbors,

We are Amy, David, Dawn, Gary, Gaya, and Melinda, and over the past year have been enjoying connecting with folks in the Highland Lake area through fun events—such as those at Treska’s—and sharing potluck dinners, game nights, and holiday gatherings in people’s homes. What has emerged is a desire to reach more neighbors and to expand activities to include interacting in practical and meaningful ways. For example, you may occasionally need pet care, a ride, or tech help.

Thus, we created “Neighborly Alliance Hendo.” The survey below will help us to go to the next level. Believing that everyone has a role to play, the idea is to discover and link the interests, needs, skills, talents, and resources of people within the community through practical services, social activities, and learning—and we’d love your participation!

Please take a few minutes to complete the short survey and know there is no obligation beyond that. For those who are interested in learning more about the Neighborly Alliance Hendo and what it can mean in your life, we invite you to an introductory social gathering in the Park at Flat Rock on Sunday, June 14, from 2 to 4pm. Save the Date!

We truly appreciate your input and look forward to co-creating with you a greater sense of connection and community that better serves and enriches us all.

Warmly,

Footloose

FOOTLOOSE

JUNE 12 - JULY 5

FOOTLOOSE is presented by arrangement with Concord Theatricals.

www.concordtheatricals.com

Stage Adaptation by DEAN PITCHFORD and WALTER BOBBIE

Music by TOM SNOW

Lyrics by DEAN PITCHFORD

This musical doesn’t just dance, it dazzles! Set to the anthems that defined a generation — “Holding Out for a Hero,” “Let’s Hear It for the Boy,” “Almost Paradise,” and of course “Footloose” — this show is sure to kick off an electrifying summer.

Dancing is not a crime…except in Bomont, Texas. Then Ren McCormack rolls in, all city swagger, restless energy, and a heartbeat too loud to ignore, which catches the eye of the preacher’s daughter with a wild streak of her own.

When Ren’s beat hits, the quiet cracks, the pulse quickens, and the town just can’t stand still. What begins as rebellion becomes revival, grief gives way to groove, and a community reclaims its rhythm.

The band’s on fire, the kicks are higher, now you gotta cut loose!
