Three-Day Printmaking Workshop: Studio 116
This 3 day workshop will explore the spontaneous and dynamic medium of monotype printmaking, a very user-friendly and immediate art-making process using Acrylic (Plexi) Plates, Water-soluble inks and Water-soluble drawing materials. The monotype offers a way of working that can be spontaneous, fluid and very painterly. Images can be developed in a relative short space of time and because the plate retains a thin layer of ink after being printed, ( the so called ghost image ) it is easy to modify the image and work sequentially.
https://www.studio116nc.com/bsp-workshop-phil-garrett
This process has been used to great effect by a number of contemporary artists including the renowned South Carolina born artist, Jasper Johns.
Sessions will begin with simple reductive methods, single plate techniques and progress through multi-plate prints incorporating collage ( Chine Colle’ ) printed on an intaglio press.
The following printmaking papers ( RIVES BFK, STONEHENGE, ARCHES COVER ) will be needed - Studio 116 will have paper available for purchase. All other materials will be provided.
An apron and a clean folio to transport paper and finished prints are recommended.
Students are encouraged to bring working drawings sized 8x10 and/or 9 x12 to fit the monotype plates.

Grier’s father Lamar Grier was a member of “Bill Monroe’s Bluegrass Boys” in the mid-1960s. Throughout his childhood, David spent hours listening to Monroe as well as many other prominent pioneers of Bluegrass music. Among the most influential to him were flat-pick guitarists Clarence White, Tony Rice and Doc Watson. About Our Host: Miranda Wildman
Miranda grew up in a small Vermont town, shaped by the outdoors, seasonal change, and a deep love of making art nurtured by family, teachers, and community. After studying at Maine College of Art in Portland, Maine, and later returning to Vermont, Miranda eventually settled in Western North Carolina, where the region’s rich plant and animal life continues to inspire her work. Through years of art‑making and creative collaboration, Miranda has come to believe that humans are deeply connected—to the natural world and to one another—and that art is a shared human practice, not reserved for those with formal titles or credentials. Creating and experiencing art together, she believes, helps us remember our innate connection to each other and to the Earth.

Beloved Community: Portion of Honor by Evie Lennon

Information: studio116nc.com
Studio 116 is excited to present Beloved Community: Portraits of Honor with paintings and sculpture by Irish American artist Evie Lennon that highlight her African American heroes, both public and personal, in the ongoing movement for Civil Rights. The show will run from June 5–27 at Studio 116 in East Flat Rock, North Carolina. An opening reception from 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday, June 5 will include an artist talk at 6:45 p.m.
Inspiration for Beloved Community arose as public conversations intensified around Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion and the faces of the people Lennon deeply admired kept entering her mind. The exhibit honors a variety of Lennon’s heroes, many of them former colleagues from a career as an art educator in predominantly African American schools in Kansas City and as a hospital chaplain in Atlanta. Lennon’s perspective was profoundly shaped by the resilience and dedication of her fellow educators as well as by students, their families, and healthcare professionals.
Black activists—from Alvin Brooks and MLK Jr., to Brad Lomax and Colin Kaepernick—also have pride of place in the exhibit. Figures represented in Beloved Community were selected from a list of over a hundred people—mentors, coworkers, church elders, and neighbors who have made a deep impression on Lennon over the years, including the celebrated choir director Dr. Roosevelt Escalante and her former supervisor and principal Dr. Jennifer Malone, who is now an Assistant Professor of Education at Missouri Western State University.
“In times of cultural tension, the quiet truth of who we are—and how we choose to see one another—matters more than ever,” says Lennon, who now resides in Hendersonville, North Carolina. “Witnessing individuals overcome extraordinary obstacles to create opportunity, purpose, and hope was the norm, not the exception, in my experience.”
Lennon believes the dignity and merit of public figures—as well as those who continue to lead, uplift, heal and inspire in the face of adversity—were being diminished in public discourse and the dismantling of DEI initiatives. She views each artwork in Beloved Community as a creation expressing her gratitude and love, celebrating the ripple effect one person’s vision and influence can have on widening circles.
A St. Louis native, Lennon spent decades in Kansas City and Atlanta before moving to western North Carolina in 2025 to continue her fine art career. She holds a BFA from Washington University in St. Louis, a Master’s in Studio Arts from the University of Missouri–Kansas City. She earned her K–12 teaching certificate from Avila University after working as a continuing education instructor and admissions counselor for the Kansas City Art Institute.
Lennon’s work has been exhibited widely, including in venues in Kansas City, Atlanta, Minneapolis, and Tulsa. She is the author and illustrator of the art journaling guide “Drawing Comfort for Chronic Conditions” and has created murals for public and private spaces including St. Luke’s Hospital in Kansas City and in numerous locations in Atlanta.
“I realize now that my unshakeable feeling that I was in the presence of greatness was spot on, because the people I was graced to know tirelessly continue to do good in a world that can make you so tired,” Lennon says. “The people I painted and sculpted couldn’t be more different from one another but what they had in common was an indomitable spirit.”
Studio 116 is located at 116 W. Blue Ridge Rd., East Flat Rock, NC, 28726. Regular gallery hours are Wednesday – Saturday, 11 a.m. – 4 p.m., or by appointment. Footloose
FOOTLOOSE
JUNE 12 - JULY 5
FOOTLOOSE is presented by arrangement with Concord Theatricals.
Stage Adaptation by DEAN PITCHFORD and WALTER BOBBIE
Music by TOM SNOW
Lyrics by DEAN PITCHFORD
This musical doesn’t just dance, it dazzles! Set to the anthems that defined a generation — “Holding Out for a Hero,” “Let’s Hear It for the Boy,” “Almost Paradise,” and of course “Footloose” — this show is sure to kick off an electrifying summer.
Dancing is not a crime…except in Bomont, Texas. Then Ren McCormack rolls in, all city swagger, restless energy, and a heartbeat too loud to ignore, which catches the eye of the preacher’s daughter with a wild streak of her own.
When Ren’s beat hits, the quiet cracks, the pulse quickens, and the town just can’t stand still. What begins as rebellion becomes revival, grief gives way to groove, and a community reclaims its rhythm.
The band’s on fire, the kicks are higher, now you gotta cut loose!
Event Times: 2:00 PM & 7:30 PM
TICKETS STARTING AT: $60

Generations Over Dinner
Generations Over Dinner
Friday, June 19, 2026 at 6 PM at the Treska's Pavilion, we're tickled to bring back Generations Over Dinner for the third year in a row, due to popular demand.
What happens when you sit at a table with someone 30 years older than you and someone 20 years younger? The conversation changes. The questions get better. You start to remember things you didn't know you were carrying.
This is an evening of real food (from Treska's kitchen), real stories, and the kind of conversation that crosses every generational line. Facilitators Hope Paterson and Julian Guderley return to lead the evening, bringing the same warmth and depth that has made this one of the most talked-about events at Highland Lake.
This year, the evening opens with short, true stories from people who live the Highland Lake story. Then you'll sit at a mixed-generation table and talk about what this place means, what your generation sees in it, and what you'd carry forward.
Guests have traveled from Canada, Vermont, and Texas to be at these tables. Ages six to ninety-three have shared a meal and left saying it was unlike anything they'd experienced. Seats are limited. You can purchase your tickets below:

Kanuga Forest Bathing
Gather for a morning of reflection and intention in the woods of Kanuga.
Forest Bathing is a gentle, guided practice of slowing down and re-entering relationship with the natural world—not as visitors, but as participants who belong.
Rooted in the Japanese practice of Shinrin-yoku and shaped by contemplative and nature-based wisdom, this experience invites you to move at the pace of the forest, awaken your senses, and listen for what the land is offering. Through simple prompts, quiet wandering, and moments of shared reflection, we practice receiving—breath, beauty, texture, sound—and noticing how care and attention naturally flow back in return.
This is not a hike, a workout, or a performance. There is no destination to reach and nothing to accomplish. Chairs, rest, and spacious pauses are always welcome. You are invited just as you are.
Forest Bathing at Kanuga is an invitation to remember:
that you are part of the living ecosystem
that the land is not a backdrop, but a companion
that reciprocity begins with attention and gratitude
Come as you are. Leave with a softened nervous system, a steadier heart, and a renewed sense of belonging—to yourself, to the land, and to the wider web of life.
All bodies and backgrounds welcome. No prior experience required.
Aimée Bostwick is a spiritual director whose work is rooted in The Episcopal Church and shaped by interspiritual, embodied practices. She holds a Master of Arts in Spiritual Formation from the Seminary of the Southwest, with additional formation in forest bathing, interfaith and interspiritual chaplaincy through the Order of Hildegard, and yoga (200-hour YTT in progress). She serves Kanuga as Senior Advisor for Program Innovation, cultivating experiences that invite connection to self, community, the natural world, and the Sacred.

The spring 2026 concert of the Blue Ridge Ringers will feature a program of all popular hits. Pieces will include jazz standards, pop and rock hits and patriotic songs.
Ed Tompkins, Organist & Director of Music at St. John in the Wilderness said, “It's quite a different experience to hear a bell choir present songs such as "Fly Me to the Moon," "Hey Jude" and "We Are the Champions!" I hope lots of area residents come and enjoy a Mother's Day concert of easy listening.”
The Blue Ridge Ringers is an auditioned community handbell ensemble founded by Connie Engle in September 1995 in Hendersonville. They are a diverse group of ringers from across the region. Many also direct or ring with their church handbell groups or other ensembles.
The group ring five octaves of Malmark and Schulmerich handbells and five octaves of Malmark choirchimes. They practice weekly at Hendersonville First United Methodist Church.

The Many Lives of Carl Sandburg
Last chance to find out what the buzz is all about. . .
A year ago, no one expected The Many Lives of Carl Sandburg would be performed nineteen times to audiences totaling 1,360. It has been quite the run. Audiences have responded warmly, often with standing ovations.
Join us at Carl Sandburg Home National Historic Site on Saturday, May 9 at 10:00 am or 1:00 pm for the final performances.
The free sixty-minute show takes place in the garage next to the Sandburg home. Audiences learn about Sandburg’s amazing life story as told by six actors who give dramatic and humorous readings from his poetry and prose and sing songs from Sandburg’s American Songbag. The play is informative, entertaining, and thought-provoking. Many say they are surprised by the range of Sandburg’s life and struck by how his belief in democracy and social justice still resonates.
Playwright John Quinley is also the author of the book Discovering Carl Sandburg. The troupe includes director Karen Moore and cast members Eric Young, David Leader, Meredith Kuhn, CC Blackburn, Judi Ingram Adkins, Butch Adkins, Lyn Morton, Mark Zedella, and Phil Moore.
Concert at Flat Rock Cinema
On Thursday, May 7, 2026, at 7:00 p.m., STEVE ROBINSON & STEVE KIRKLAND with Special Guest EMMA ROBINSON will perform in the #ListeningRoom at Flat Rock Cinema.
Thursday, May 7, 2026 - 6:00 Doors - 7:00 Concert
About The Musicians
Originally from Northern England, Robinson relocated to Florida in the mid 80’s and became part of The Headlights, a popular Tampa Bay area folk-rock band, whose sound soon caught the ear of legendary Byrds frontman, Roger McGuinn, who asked the lads to be his backing band for a Tonight Show appearance and subsequent US tour.
After his departure from the Headlights, Steve spent the next couple of decades as a solo artist, writing, recording and releasing a succession of albums that garnered considerable praise for their modern melodic spin on the post Beatles and Byrds era and beyond:
"Robinson’s regal melodies offer the essence of a timeless treasure.” - Goldmine Magazine
“Robinson's songs are an almost perfect melding of British pop with modern folky Americana.” - babysue/LMNOP
Co-conspirator and backing guitarist Steve Kirkland retired locally from the nonprofit world in 2018 and has concentrated his efforts on his “labor of love”, providing atmosphere and supportive layers to former band Stepchild, and currently as lead guitarist in Jeff Michels Folkadelic Jam. Kirkland thinks “life is better with slide guitar” and is chuffed about his happy accident of meeting Robinson and their resulting collaborative performances.
Emma Robinson is Steve’s talented daughter whose exquisite vocals have adorned Steve’s records since she was ten years old. Effortlessly and seamlessly switching from chest to head-voice, her distinctive singing-style has even caught the attention of esteemed producers Brian Eno (Bowie/Talking Heads) and Mark Ronson (Bruno Mars/Amy Winehouse) each of whom have discussed her unique voice on their respective podcasts and TV shows.
Flat Rock Cinema is an experience destination with New Movies, Classic Film Anniversaries, and Improv Comedy. Guests enjoy entertainment experiences paired with an elevated cinema dining menu, craft beer & cider, wine, and seltzer.
