It's been seven long years since Historic Flat Rock, Inc. has sponsored an historic home tour! If you've experienced the tour in prior years, then you know how much fun it will be, and if you're new to the area or our tours, then you have a treat in store. This year HFR will have four wonderful houses and the Church of St. John in the Wilderness c1833, on tour:
Chanteloup c1841 has just experienced a six-year total refurbishment and renovation. You won't believe how interesting and great it is, including the Olmsted-designed grounds! It hasn't been open to the public since 2002. Its new owners have studied its history and brought so much of the estate back to life! Seeing the house is indeed a wonderful experience.
Rutledge Cottage c1840, the charming cottage is nestled in its own little world. Built by Dr. C. Mitchell King for his private residence while building Kenmure, it was designed after the cottages he was so fond of while studying medicine in Germany. Just recently purchased by a New Orleans family who relish historic houses, it shines with fresh charm.
Dunroy c1862 is in one of the earliest areas of Flat Rock. While retaining its charm, it is now the centerpiece of Dunroy on Rutledge subdivision. It's one of the few estates remaining that have preserved its original out buildings. While living with history, Dunroy is one of the warmest private homes in Flat Rock. Gardens and fabulous old trees are an added bonus.
Longwood c1870 as it presently presents, has never been on tour. What a treat! This charming high house so full of vitality, is draped in pebbledash, something that is so rare these days! It's a well loved, lived in house that shimmers with energy. yet retains its history. Each room is a treat!
