Studio 116 is thrilled to host an exhibit of work by Henderson County artist Tia Sculpt from Friday, Sept. 19 to Saturday, Oct. 18, 2025. ‘Correlation’ A Glimpse into the Mind of a Working Artist will feature a variety of ceramic sculptures by Tia created to hang on the wall, as well as work on paper made by the artist, including collages and flyers, some of which were created by the artist in collaboration with friends. Each artwork in the exhibit correlates with stages in the artist’s life and will be arranged in a sequential fashion.
“This show, Correlation, is an opportunity for me to present my artwork within the context of my life, particularly events and relationships, over a span of time,” says Tia, who describes her life and art to be “in cahoots” with each other. “Personally, it’s just a big reflection thing for me, it’s easier to convey my life through artwork,” she says.
Tia, who moved from Aurora, Illinois to Western North Carolina in April 2020, draws inspiration not only from her life events but also from nature, including animals as well as florals, which she works with professionally as a designer. Human figures also abound in the ceramic work, which is both hand-built and objects that have been thrown on the wheel in her studio before being altered by hand. To guide viewers, the artist will include information written on decorative tape that details some of the context of each piece and how each relates to the other thematically.
At a closing event for the exhibit on Oct. 18, a short film made by the artist will be screened. The film delves into a series of DIY house shows that Tia used to run in Aurora in order to feature her artwork, before she took up ceramics again (after a pause in working in clay after she left high school). “I didn’t get to close that door in the way I wanted on that chapter in my life,” she says. “It’ll be nice to show glimpses of my life before I moved here.”
