Community, Food, and Soul
/Something new is stirring in Flat Rock—and it’s not just the breeze off Highland Lake. With the joyful debut of Treska’s Tuesday Market, the Lindsey family has added another bright thread to the fabric of our vibrant community.
From the majestic bald eagle soaring overhead to the laughter of children in the surrounding woods, from the rhythm of live Appalachian music to the irresistible aromas of fresh-baked goods and sizzling fare, the market offered more than just commerce.
It offered connection.
With plans to be held weekly at Highland Lake Cove, this new venture is the latest collaboration of Cole and Tatyana Lindsey—of Barnhouse Kitchen fame—and Kip Lindsey, co-founder of Budy Finch Catering and head chef at Campfire Grill. Drawing on Cole’s years of experience at regional farmers markets and Kip’s flair for fun and food, the event was designed to be more than a market.
Judging from the crowd of smiling faces, delicious smells, and meaningful conversations last Tuesday, it hit the mark.
“We are plum tickled to introduce Treska’s Tuesday Market here in the Cove,” read the team’s announcement on social media. “Come make an evening of this farm- and food-forward event every Tuesday. We have more than 20 vendors you can support, as well as live music from local musicians. The bar at Treska’s will be open, and the kiddos can unleash their inner explorers at our forest playground!”
The inaugural market drew a multigenerational crowd and featured an interesting array of vendors, two musical acts, and a lakeside setting that felt both peaceful and charged with promise. There was a certain magic in the air—something that even took Cole Lindsey by surprise. “Every chance I got to lift my head and look around, it seemed like every booth had interactions going on,” he said. “That’s the sign of something good happening.”
For Cole, the market carries a personal resonance as well. Named after his grandmother Treska—a Belgian-French woman who loved music, nature, and family gatherings—it seeks to embody the soulfulness he remembers from European markets he visited as a young man. “My grandmother would be sitting down there listening to the music with a glass of scuppernong. From the grapes that she grew. That was her favorite wine,” he reflected.
At the heart of this market is a strong commitment to community. That spirit is something Kerry Lindsey, Cole and Kip’s uncle and the visionary behind Highland Lake Cove, has long championed. “It was such a confirmation,” Kerry said of the opening event. “There is an energy to the land that touches people. Always has. You put that together with good food, passionate makers, and a collaborative setting, and that’s some pretty good juju.”
That sense of incubating local creativity runs deep in the Lindsey family, rooted in their childhood on a mini-farm in Zirconia where Christmas and birthday gifts were always handmade. It’s a tradition that lives on in this market—not just in the items for sale, but in the interactions, the stories shared, and the sense of shared purpose.
The market also provides a platform for local entrepreneurs and artisans. Vendor Liz Queen, who runs a mobile flower truck, described her participation as an act of both support and joy. “I’m here to support Flat Rock and be part of the Treska’s opening—and to share the joy of flowers with people who enjoy the beauty in nature,” she said.
The response from attendees was overwhelmingly positive. Kerry reported hearing many variations of the same two sentiments: “I never knew this place was here,” and “It’s so beautiful.” That sense of discovery is something he hopes will inspire more creativity and collaboration as the market continues to grow.
Looking out over the happy crowd of vendors, shoppers, and diners, Cole Lindsey’s dream of creating something as an homage to his beloved grandmother was unfolding before his eyes. “I’m excited for this vibe. It feels like an authentic, old-world market. It feels like a market that has a soul.”
Indeed, in every laugh, every note of music, and every shared bite, Treska’s soulful spirit was unmistakably present at the Tuesday Market that bears her name.
