The Wildlife in our Backyard

A neighbor passing through our back yard.
Just behind our house, up a small hill and no more than fifty yards from our back door, a wildlife camera captures something remarkable. Day and night, season after season, it bears quiet witness to a world many never see — a world of deer and raccoons, bears and foxes, bobcats, turkeys, squirrels, rabbits, and coyotes.
Despite the encroachment of roads, homes, and fences, these animals continue to live as they have for millennia. They adapt. They endure. They move through the woods with a grace and certainty that humbles me. In a time when so much of the natural world is under pressure, it amazes and delights me to witness their resilience — and their beauty.
There is something deeply reassuring in knowing that they are still here in Flat Rock, still following the ancient patterns of the earth. Watching them, even through the lens of a trail camera, brings me joy. I feel lucky — not just to observe them, but to share this patch of land with them. Their presence is a reminder of the truth and richness of a life lived close to the land, of the quiet knowledge that we are not alone here.
This video is a small tribute to the lives that pass quietly through the woods each day. It’s a celebration of wild resilience, of instinct and grace, and of the deep connection that still exists between people and the natural world — if we choose to see it.
